The documentary series
“Archipelagos at the End of the World” explores remote and fascinating regions of the planet. Each episode highlights the cultural richness and historical heritage of the populations living in strategic locations such as the Strait of Malacca and the Vanuatu archipelago. These stories reveal how traditions and ways of life are shaped by contact with nature and intercultural exchanges.
An essential journey to understand the unique dynamics of these marginal territories.
THE STRAIT OF MALACCA:
Since the dawn of time, connecting the Indian Ocean to the China Sea, the Strait of Malacca has occupied a strategic position on trade routes between Europe, Indonesia, and China. The era of clipper ships and piracy is now a thing of the past. While the legacy of long centuries of Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonization can still be seen in the stonework of historic districts, Singapore, Malacca, and Phuket are resolutely committed to modernity. A mosaic of modernity shaped by men and women from the four corners of Asia, each with their own cultures, religions, and traditions.
NEW CALEDONIA-VANUATU:
Departing from Auckland, New Zealand, the Austral, an expedition cruise ship, will head north towards New Caledonia and the Vanuatu archipelago, formerly known as the New Hebrides. For two weeks, we will sail through the heart of Melanesia.
Long hidden from the main shipping routes, these islands, where nature expresses all its power, are home to peoples who proudly display their cultural roots through sculpture, music, and ritual dance.
